Wow, the new school year is already here! With the new school year brings lots of exciting changes. Rahn Elementary is our new Arts & Technology Magnet school where I am the art teacher. I will be using strategies from the Responsive Classroom approach in my classroom so our first month will include discussing expectations and creating art room rules, establishing hopes and dreams for the art year, and learning common procedures in the art room. We will also be learning about Hispanic artists during September for Hispanic Heritage Month, and we will be traveling on a journey through time and across cultures as we create art inspired in this year's theme of One World.
Kindergarten – The first few times in the art room is very exciting so we have to move slow for our youngest artists. We will begin by using guided discovery to explore the many things in the art room and drawing a portrait of our art teacher, Mrs. Petri.
First Grade – We will be learning about the Art Elements including line, color and shape. We will begin this exploration by creating artwork to correspond with the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. Next we will be painting concentric circles using color harmonies and contrasts in the style of Vassily Kandinsky.
Second Grade – We will be reading the book "Ish" by Peter Reynolds. Learning how to draw self portraits will be part of our focus at the beginning of this year. Second graders be concentrating on shapes and color and look at the artwork by artists who have used squares in their art; Mondrian, Vasserely, Rothko. We will be making our own "Boogie Woogie" artwork.
Third Grade – Third graders will start out the year learning about the Art Elements by completing their own Art Elements packet. They will be introduced to beginning facial proportions and completed a self portrait on the cover of their packets. Each page will be completed using a different art medium and focuses on a specific element.
Fourth Grade – Our introduction to the Art Elements and Principles this year will begin with the art of Joan Miro. We completed a group project called "Exquisite Corpse" where each student completed a different portion of a silly character to complete a Miro style drawing. Student also create their own "Alien" using organic shapes, repetition, pattern, and color.
Fifth Grade – Wassily Kandinsky is the inspiration for our first art unit exploring line, shape, and color. Students completed individual watercolor paintings, and then worked together for a group mural on large paper using tempera paint.
Sixth Grade – The sixth grade students created a watercolor designed "Elements" pocket folder with art trading cards they will be making and sharing which represent each of the Art Elements. Each set of cards will explore a different Art Elements through use of a variety of art mediums. The pockets and cards include the definition of each of the elements and a few of the art principles as well.
